A Great Start to 2009 0

Living Root is off to a great start to our 2009 season! We’re working hard at the pool twice a week, building up those muscles and working on our technique. Not everyone loves the pool, but everyone loves the results of a winter spent training hard. Our coaching staff has been putting us through the ringer with endless drills and 1-2-3 pyramids, and we can’t wait for it to get even more intense as we move closer to race season.

We’re always looking for new members, so if you want to start now, you can hit the ground running (or, rather, hit the water paddling) when we finally get the boats in the water! No matter what, you’ll fit in on our team. We’re looking for people who are ready to compete and definitely ready to have fun. Our team is made up of a broad range of people. We’ve worked with paddlers from all disciplines and jobs - computer programmers, teachers, those who work at renewable energy jobs and others!

Contact us if you’re interested in giving it a try!

What to Expect at Practice 0

Whether we’re in the pool or on the water, you can expect to get wet. But, you can also expect to have facilities to change into dry clothes post-practice.

Before all practices, we do a warm-up of basic exercises to improve strength and flexibility. After practice we always cool down and stretch out. We also provide paddles and life jackets, so all you need to do is show up. Coaches provide one-on-one attention and training. If you’ve never paddled a day in your life, we will show you how!

At the pool, paddlers wear gym clothes and sandals like Keens or Tevas (though most go barefoot). We sit on the side of the pool and paddle in the water (there is no actual dragon boat in the pool). We paddle for 45-60 minutes, doing various strength and technique drills.
Practice

On the water, paddlers dress for the weather. It is typically colder and windier out on the water, and evening practices can get chilly fast. On Saturdays, sunscreen is a must. These practices last for two hours and include steady paddling, timing drills, strength training and race pieces.
