<title>RENEWED SAVING TEENS IN CRISIS COLLABORATIVE SPONSORSHIP</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article157.html</link>
<description>

All,

Living Root Dragon Boat is proud to announce that it has received a renewed sponsorship from the Saving Teens In Crisis Collaborative (STICC).

Saving Teens In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA. STICC was formed in April of 2004 to assist disadvantaged troubled teens and families struggling with substance abuse and other emotional issues.

&quot;Staffed entirely by volunteers, STICC works with health organizations, educational consultants, wilderness programs, boarding schools, rehabilitation centers and educational lawyers to steer these families to the resources that they need, but did not know about and could not afford. By leveraging the expertise and generosity of dedicated professionals and caring institutions, STICC guides children and their families towards a brighter future.

Saving Teens In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) was founded to provide that framework, as well as the necessary financial assistance, by means of a comprehensive, multi-phase plan that incorporates both financial and emotional support throughout an 18-24 month process of evaluation, intervention and education.

The STICC methodology is different because it provides a long-term holistic approach which incorporates all of the professional disciplines—the medical professionals, educational consultants, wilderness programs, boarding schools, and rehabilitation centers—to evaluate, place, and fund a child into an appropriate sequence of programs and schools.&quot; Visit www.savingteens.org today!

We greatly thank Catherine Reuben, Patricia Abreu and John Reuben for their generous support of Living Root Dragon Boat and making this sponsorship possible.

Living Root Dragon Boat is continuing its campaign to raise $10,000 to sponsor its teams to race in Boston, Ottawa, US Nationals/Long Beach, Pawtucket, Hartford and San Francisco in 2008. To contribute to this fundraising effort, contact Bob Lee at Bob.Le&#101;&#064;&#108;ivingroot.org for more information!

<title>HARTFORD DRAGON BOAT RACE REPORT (RIVERFRONT DRAGON BOAT RACE)(SEPTEMBER 15, 2007)</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article143.html</link>
<description>
All,

Living Root Dragon Boat competed at the Riverfront Dragon Boat Race in Hartford, Connecticut on September 15, 2007.

With our 55 men and women and 3 teams, we captured 2nd Place in the A Division with Team 1 (2 out of 41 teams), 4th Place in the A Division Consolation Finals with Team 2 (8 out of 41 teams), and 3rd Place in the B Division Consolation Finals with Team 3 (15 out of 41 teams).

In contrast, at our first race in Hartford in 2005, we captured 2nd Place in the C Division and in 2006, we captured 1st Place in the B Division and 1st Place in the E Division.

To have 2 teams crack the A Division and be only 2 seconds away from capturing the whole Hartford race is a solid accomplishment and conclusion to our local races this year.

Special thanks to our carpool drivers, Evan Smith for the use of his pickup truck, cooking equipment and cooking skills, Hem Pokharel for helping arrange carpooling, and Lily Cheung for helping organize the team dinner. Special thanks also to Kali Drake, Nancy Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Stoica, Greg, and all of our other friends and supporters for helping with photography, our campsite, and showing their support.

Very special thanks to Janice Martin, Brian Kravitz, Joe Arnold, Cathie Sepe, Jennifer Rezendes, and Rob Vallande for racing with us.

Special thanks to our main sponsor, Robinson &amp; Cole LLP, for helping us race at this event. Robinson &amp; Cole LLP is a Hartford law firm which has sponsored the Hartford dragon boat race and dragon boat racing since the first Hartford dragon boat race in 2001. This is the third year in a row that the firm has sponsored Living Root Dragon Boat.

Special thanks to Craig Mergins, Chris Hayes and the staff of Riverfront Recapture as well as the staff of Great White North for running another successful dragon boat race.

<title>NEW DRAGON BOATS (MAY 12, 2007)</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article128.html</link>
<description>

All,

On Saturday May 12, 2007, Living Root Dragon Boat unveiled its new fleet of 2 Simon River Sports dragon boats at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital dock.

For Living Root Dragon Boat, these dragon boats represent 2 years of earning a team of athletic, hardworking, committed, and team-oriented men and women, through extensive recruiting and training, to properly utilize these dragon boats as soon as they touched the Charles River. Their practice fees, donations, and fundraising efforts all helped make this achievement possible.

Living Root Dragon Boat was founded only 2 years ago in January 2005 with minimal funding, no dragon boat team, and 3 co-founders including May-Lynn Chang, Scott Spurlock and me. These dragon boats are a concrete example of what can be accomplished by having an idea and taking the necessary steps to transform it into reality. Living Root Dragon Boat is about growth, development and excelling at the highest level possible both as individuals and as a team.

These dragon boats mark a milestone towards our long-term goal of having a team who will compete at an international level and race against the best of the best.

Our Simon River Sports dragon boats were built in Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada, and are constructed from fiberglass/vinylester resin. They are each 41' long, 45.8&quot; at their widest point, 28&quot; deep, and 620 pounds in weight (see www.simonriversports.com). These model dragon boats were used at the August 2006 International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In conjunction with this purchase, Living Root Dragon Boat also ordered a custom-built double-axle steel trailer from Wright Trailers, Inc. in Seekonk, Massachusetts. This trailer is capable of holding 6 dragon boats. When loaded with a dragon boat and hitched to a pickup truck, the overall length of the boat, trailer and truck is the equivalent size of a tractor trailer truck.

We greatly thank the following individuals for helping make our purchase and docking of the dragon boats possible: Steve King, Ross Lilley, Karen Lukanovich, Lou Lukanovich, Gary Rust, Kevin Stott, Rob Welch, and Steve Wright.

Special thanks goes to our member, Evan Smith, for the exceptional time and energy designing and overseeing the construction of our trailer as well transporting our dragon boats from Simon River Sports near Montreal to Boston. His trailer-handling skills were instrumental in our receiving the boats unscathed.

For potential sponsors, we have 10' of open space on the bows of each dragon boat for your name and logo. For more sponsorship details contact Bob Lee at Bob.Le&#101;&#064;&#108;ivingroot.org for more information today!

In 2007, Living Root Dragon Boat is the Boston dragon boat team to join. Consistent effort, achieve results!

Kind regards,

Bob Lee

President

<title>LIVING ROOT DRAGON BOAT PARTICIPATES AT WAKE UP THE EARTH FESTIVAL (SATURDAY MAY 5, 2007)</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article127.html</link>
<description>

All,

On Saturday May 5, 2007, Living Root Dragon Boat teammates Brian Caldwell, David Liu, Nila Munawar, Margo Mungovan, and Dave and Sandy Parker ran a table at Spontaneous Celebrations' Wake Up The Earth Festival in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

Armed with a photo board, t-shirts, last year's medals, and flyers, we recruited paddlers and spread the word about the sport of dragon boat. Many wanted more information about our new dragon boat youth team program.

We told everyone to come see our team at the Boston Dragon Boat Festival on June 9-10, 2007 - so now we have to win and look great doing it! The day was a huge success and we look forward to going back next year.

Kind regards,

Kind regards,

Sandy Parker

<title>NEW PATHWAYS TO CHINA SPONSORSHIP!</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article122.html</link>
<description>

All

Living Root Dragon Boat is proud to announce it has received a new sponsorship from Pathways to China! Sponsorship from this program will go towards developing our new juniors team to race at the Boston Dragon Boat Festival on June 9-10, 2007. We invite additional new sponsors to support our teenagers to train and race for the remainder of our 2007 racing season.

The Pathways to China program offers Massachusetts students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to study Chinese culture, history and society through a combination of classroom instruction, travel and online learning. The program involves teachers and administrators from four participating public school districts in greater Boston (Burlington, Malden, Lynn, and Winchester) and the private Beaver Country Day School.

We greatly thank Rachel Zucker for helping make this sponsorship possible.

Living Root Dragon Boat is also campaigning to raise the last $4,000 of its $16,000 goal to purchase a dragon boat this year. To contribute to this fundraising effort, contact Bob Lee at Bob.Le&#101;&#064;&#108;ivingroot.org for more information!

Kind regards,

Bob Lee
President

<title>LIVING ROOT DRAGON BOAT PARTICIPATES AT RIVERSING (SEPTEMBER 21, 2006)!</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article105.html</link>
<description>

All,

On Thursday September 21, 2006, Living Root Dragon Boat participated at the 3rd Annual RiverSing, a free outdoor concert performed on the Weeks Footbridge across the Charles River near Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event was sponsored by Revels (www.revels.org) and the Charles River Conservancy (www.thecharles.org).

This year's performance featured 5 area choruses: Sharing a New Song, Boston City Singers, Musica Sacra, Halalisa Singers and Nick Page's Mystic Chorale. The concert also featured Libana and their Balkan-style call-and-response singing across the Charles. Other performers included Stan Strickland, the Mystic Drummers and the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band.

Living Root Dragon Boat paddled during one of the performances on a dragon boat from the Boston Dragon Boat Festival and the Boston Children's Museum. A specially created gong was fixed to the bow of the boat by musician and composer, Steven Jobe, and performed by Paddy Swanson, Artistic Director of Revels.

Living Root Dragon Boat gives special thanks to Paddy Swanson, Revels, The Charles River Conservancy, Peter Lew, the Boston Dragon Boat Festival, and the Boston Children's Museum for the opportunity to participate at this unique cultural event in front of hundreds of spectators.

<title>HARTFORD DRAGON BOAT RACE RACE REPORT (SEPTEMBER 16, 2006)</title>
<link>http://www.livingroot.org/Article104.html</link>
<description>

LIVING ROOT DRAGON BOAT WINS GOLD IN B AND E DIVISIONS!

All,

Living Root Dragon Boat won gold in the B and E Divisions at the Hartford Dragon Boat Race on September 16, 2006 (Official race results are available at: http://www.livingroot.org/modules.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=92)!

Competing in a pool of 47 teams, Living Root Dragon Boat raced with 2 teams, totaling 41 men and women. On a 500-meter race course, both teams won by a boat-length or more on their respective final races. Living Root Dragon Boat Open Team 1 finished with a best time of 2:35:08. Living Root Dragon Boat Open Team 2 finished with a best time of 2:59:85.

These wins cap off a very successful 2006 racing season for recruiting, sponsorship and performance on the water. Both teams were mostly composed of paddlers who were new to dragonboating as of this year.

To be a part of a Living Root team is to be a part of a very unique and special team in Boston. Its men and women train consistently and are motivated to succeed and win. They want to earn their positions on their team and earn their wins. They want to be a part of, and grow, a strong, positive and selfless community. Living Root Dragon Boat is about living, vitality and adding meaning to its members' lives. Nothing but success can come from this type of environment: success over yourself, for yourself and for others.

I want to thank the following people for their help with this race:

Coach Scott Spurlock, for his time, wisdom and energy setting up the boat line-ups, coaching our teams, and his steering skills.

Charlene Chen for her drummer skills keeping the teams in time, focused and together during the races.

Alex Chua for arranging and setting up our campsite.

Evan Smith and Nancy Murphy for helping drive down our larger campsite equipment and food.

Margo Mungovan for coordinating the carpool.

Laura Klink for photographing and videoing our team and races. Laura's raw video of the team in action is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxcQJwd5xNA.

Joe Marfuggi, Craig Mergins, Renee Jones and the rest of the race organizers and volunteers at Riverfront Recapture LLC for running another great race as well as Jim Farintosh and the staff of Great White North Communications, Inc. for their officiating and management of the racing itself.

Our generous sponsors for this race: Robinson &amp; Cole LLP, Rock Star Energy Drink, and Stacy’s Pita Chip Company.

Robinson &amp; Cole LLP's sponsorship of Living Root Dragon Boat represents its sixth straight year sponsoring dragon boat racing in Hartford since the race's inception in 2001 as well as its second straight year sponsoring Living Root Dragon Boat.
